A donation differs from a grant in that it is an unrestricted source of funding for your business.  Unlike a grant which is allocated to a business under specific terms and for a specific use outlined in the funding program requirements, a donation can be used for any activity or project your business desires. Donations are difficult to secure however as there is not much upside for the donor. Typically, they will come from close friends and family who choose to support you without the expectation of success.
